About us...

The Petersburg Economic Development Council is a non-profit, community-based corporation established in 2001. The nine-member council is made up of representatives from local government and community members with various experience and expertise in fields relating to economic development.

The mission of the organization is, "to provide steady moderate growth that results in a strong, diversified economy compatible with our traditional resources-based lifestyle."

Toward this end, the following goals were established: - Encourage growth of our traditional fishing, seafood processing and timber industries. - Support local businesses in their efforts to grow. - Diversify the economy in ways that are compatible with out lifestyles and interests by nurturing visitation by independent tourists' telecommunications; recreational opportunities; and the services, businesses, activities and facilities that support retirement and comfortable living for our residents. - Build upon our strategic location at the geographic center of Southeast Alaska. - Develop and grow in a manner compatible with both use and enjoyment of our natural surroundings and resources.

The upbeat progressive attitude of Petersburg accompanied by our strategic location as the geographical center of Southeast Alaska provides for an atmosphere of networking and cooperation with neighboring communities. Petersburg boasts daily jet service allowing easy travel to destinations both north and south as well as dependable Alaska Marine Highway Ferry transportation.

The partnership between the Petersburg Economic Development Council and the City of Petersburg causes a direct relationship between the EDC Coordinator and the Petersburg City Manager. The City Manager is the chief administrative officer and reports directly to the City Council. The City employs approximately 90 employees, including eleven department heads that report to the City Manager. The City provides a wide range of municipal services including: Administration, Finance, Planning & Community Development, Public Works, Police, Fire, Parks and Recreation, Library, Power & Light, Harbor and Elderly Housing.

Other contacts will include, but are not limited to: Alaska Municipal League, State and local Chamber of Commerce, Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development, and Southeast Conference.
